Cliff Line Park
Site Information
Antalya is on the coast of Mediterranean sea. Average temperature during summer is 32C degree and 13C degree which is cooled by north wind during winter. Fall and spring are heavy rainy. Despite of its weather, Antalya is hospitable for tourism in all seasons.
Problems and Solutions
Interrupted pathways along the site
Underutilized cliff, hills, rivers and hence, the view.
Monotonous experiences on the way
There are 3 continuous movement paths formed by hanged cliff path, main pathway and along the road pedestrian pavement. Amenities for each interest and age group are settled along the main pathway. Utilizing the slope, big parts of the buildings are buried not to disturb the view and used as walkable green roof.
Unique experience is gained by cliff pathway that is hanged from the cliff. Since the main view is the sea, there are several sitting types on the way. The structure of pathway is steel and decking is wood
There are bikelanes on both sides of the main pathway. Bridging system is used for over rain gardens when it is filled by rain water. Pathways are wooden laminates and connection pathways are made of stone bricks.
Rainwater Runoff
Dense rain and even hail can be seen during fall and spring in Antalya, therefore, storm water runoff has to be controlled. Since the slope is directed toward seaside, uncontrolled runoff flows to the coast. Some systems are introduced to the site to control this issue such as rain garden. Captured water will be filtered through the system and saved in the underground storage for irrigation.
Other strategy is permeable paving system to absorb rainwater overflow. Not only pavement but also bikelanes have the same ability.
Along the site rainwater recharge groundwater through greenery.
Since Antalya faces 300 days of sun during a year, it gets unbearably hot with humidity during summer. Therefore, canopy system will be used along the site to avoid direct sunlight.
Construction Detail
Raingardens will be filled during rainy seasons and once it reaches to its maximum water level, storm-water will flow to the storages while getting filtered on the way. There are several storages along the site because the water will be used for irrigation. Native plants are superior in rain gardens.
In curtain locations canopies are introduced and these are made of 10x10 cm wooden structural elements that are interlocked to form the structure. Canopies have double gridal system and pieces are connected to each other with threaded bar. There are thinner wooden bars (5x5 cm) inside some of gridal gaps (1 m) to have better shading. Columns of canopies are also wooden double grid that are attached to the grid with angle bracket.
Vertical Garden
The vertical garden is 6-18 meters and consist of 3 main and 3 sub levels which are hanged from the cliff. 10x10 wooden gridal structure is fixed on the main steel frame structure and secondary 30x30 wooden gridal structure. Fruits that can be planted in the garden have climbing ability such as grape. They grow both outside and inside of the wooden grid and accessible with catwalk on the façade. Grape types that are grown in the garden: concord grape, domingo grape, red globe grape
